Sciacca (AGRIGENTO) has ancient origins, even though it is
not possible to establish precisely the date of its foundation to king cocalo.
the existence of the phoenix is not
documented,
however it is known that around the year 628 bc, sciacca was a Greek village.
in the year 409 bc many selinuntines came to
sciacca to escape annibale giacone's destruction of their town.

at rocca nadore, a fortified
Punic centre was
discovered, also showing the existence of Carthaginians.
sciacca was exploited by the
Romans, and the
port became one of the most important for the wheat trade.
during the Byzantine
period, a monk named
saint calogero, after having introduced Christianity in Sicily, decided to stop
and live the life of a hermit in a cave on mount kronio. great artistic and commercial works of art
were produced in sciacca under first Arab then Norman rule.
under the angeuin rule in 1316, sciacca
underwent a heavy siege, but Federico ii d' Aragon enlarged the
circumference of the city walls. after his death the town became the
headquarters of one of the four vicariates on the island.
with the perollo family came the "caso di
sciacca". the marriage between margherita peralta and don artale Luna provoked a century-long conflict, sometimes led by the
Luna family, other times
by the perollo family, involving all the most important families in sciacca. this
conflict led to the ruin of the town, caused also by a series of incidents such
as earthquakes, famine and epidemics.
